Job Summary: The Liquid Production and Quality Assurance Manager oversees the Cellar and Quality teams to ensure the production of high-quality hard cider. This role is essential for maintaining the quality, consistency, and innovation of our products while ensuring all processes meet safety standards and industry regulations. The ideal candidate is an experienced leader with a background in commercial fermentation, quality control, and process optimization, coupled with a commitment to continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities:
Operations & Production Management:
- Lead and manage all aspects of cider production, including fermentation, juice analysis, and yeast management.
- Plan and schedule staff shifts, juice deliveries, and fermentations to meet production goals.
- Utilize EOS systems for purchasing and resource allocation and manage inventory through NetSuite software.
- Ensure all products meet quality standards and branding specifications before packaging.
- Lead cellar production and develop R&D ciders as needed.
- Maintain sanitation and safety protocols across all production areas.
Quality Assurance:
- Perform daily product testing and analysis, including pre-packaging, post-packaging, and market sample evaluations.
- Record and analyze data for product development and quality control.
- Investigate and report on quality issues, including customer complaints.
- Develop and implement bacterial and yeast plating programs.
- Update and create Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ensuring all team members understand and adhere to these guidelines.
Team Leadership:
- Recruit, train, and mentor a small team in the cellar and quality assurance departments.
- Foster a positive and professional team environment, encouraging continuous improvement and adherence to company standards.
- Ensure efficient and safe working practices among all team members.
Inventory & Cost Management:
- Monitor and maintain appropriate inventory levels for consumables.
- Track ingredient and product costs accurately within Obeer software.
- Negotiate contracts and pricing with vendors to ensure cost-effective purchasing.
General Duties:
- Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
- Stay informed about industry trends, techniques, and products.
- Perform manual labor when needed, including lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly and standing for long periods.
- Travel as needed for work, conferences, and professional development.
Qualifications:
Required:
- High school diploma with a minimum of 5 years of experience in fermentation, quality control, and management.
- Strong ability to interpret analytical data and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Deep understanding of the cider industry and excellent communication skills.
- Experiencing in manufacturing environment.
Preferred:
- Experience with large-scale production (150 bbl+ batches) and knowledge of cider styles and apple varieties.
- Familiarity with LEAN inventory management and non-smoker preferred.
- Strong negotiation skills and a "can-do" attitude.
Working Conditions:
- Work will be split between a climate-controlled, smoke-free environment and various other business locations.
- Noise levels vary from moderate to loud, requiring ear protection in certain areas.
- Exposure to mechanical parts, high places, extreme temperatures, and hazardous chemicals is common; eye protection is mandatory.
- Regular work hours are eight hours per day, five days a week, with some weekend work required.
