TITLE: Sommelier
LOCATION: The Aerie
STATUS: Full-time – evenings; Tipped Position
SCHEDULE: Evenings – 3:00 pm to close
Must be able to work any day of the week, including weekends and holidays.
SUMMARY
As a Sommelier and Restaurant Supervisor, you will provide friendly, knowledgeable, and responsive service to create an exceptional wine and dining experience for all of our guests. This supervisory role includes assisting guests with wine selections, pairing wines with menu items, ensuring the overall quality of wine service, and acting as the maître d' while being responsible for closing the restaurant. You will assist the General Manager with all necessary tasks to ensure smooth operations throughout the evening.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Greet guests and provide detailed information on the wine list, including recommendations and wine pairing suggestions.
- Act as the maître d', managing reservations, guest seating, and the overall flow of service.
- Oversee the closing of the restaurant, ensuring all tasks are completed, and the restaurant is secured at the end of the shift.
- Collaborate with front servers and kitchen staff to ensure seamless wine service and a smooth dining experience.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of wine varieties, regions, and vintages, and communicate this information effectively to guests.
- Ensure wine service standards are met, including proper wine presentation, decanting, and glassware usage.
- Participate in staff training sessions, educating FOH staff on wine selections and pairing techniques.
- Adhere to Snowbird's policies and state regulations regarding responsible alcohol service.
- Assist the General Manager with tasks such as overseeing staff, handling guest concerns, and ensuring overall restaurant operations are smooth throughout the evening.
- Take fast and appropriate action to resolve any guest concerns regarding wine service, ensuring a positive experience.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and replenished wine station and assist with the upkeep of server stations.
- Actively participate in sales goals and incentive programs.
WHAT YOU NEED TO GET THE JOB DONE
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Certified Sommelier Level 1 or equivalent preferred.
- 2-3 years of relevant experience in wine service within a fine dining environment, with supervisory experience preferred.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Food Handler Permit, Tips Certification, Sheriff Work Card.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to describe and discuss wines and pairings with guests confidently.
- Demonstrated ability to learn and memorize the wine list, including vintages, regions, and flavor profiles.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to handle guest concerns professionally.
- Ability to multi-task and maintain communication with guests, servers, kitchen, and bar staff.
- Must have strong arithmetic skills for handling transactions involving wine sales.
- Experience with inventory management and a self-banking environment.
- Must possess a strong understanding of Snowbird operations and the dining experience.
- Supervisory experience and the ability to manage a team effectively, especially during closing shifts.
WORK SCHEDULE
Specific Shift: 3:00 pm - close, must be able to work any day of the week, including weekends and holidays. This position is responsible for closing the restaurant.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Must be prepared to stay overnight if necessary, on occasional times of road closures.
- May experience unusual stress from high business volumes, deadlines, continual work with the public, winter conditions, snow night requirements, and commuting to/from Snowbird.
- Must be able to lift 25+ lbs.
- Must be able to carry trays, wine bottles, and other items needed for service.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
- Must demonstrate the ability to bend, kneel, handle, reach, grasp, and perform repetitive motions.
- Work is subject to frequent interruptions, making continuity and accuracy difficult; frequent exposure to noise.
